Acireale and the Riviera of the lemons (distance 5 km): baroque town at the foot of Mount Etna built on a lavic plateau (La Timpa).
To be visited: the ancient centre of the town with S.Sebastiano Basilica, the wonderful Piazza del Duomo and the Cathedral, SS. Pietro e Paolo church. Much closer to the city is the Riviera of the Lemons with it’s typical Sicilian fishing villages S.Maria La Scala, S.Tecla, Pozzillo and Stazzo. Acireale is also famous for it’s Carnival, the best one in Sicily, which takes place in February.
Taormina (distance 25 km): founded by the Greeks, Taormina had an incredible development during last century becoming one of the most important tourist resort in the world, well-known for the archaeological and naturalistic beauties.
To visit: the ancient Greek-Roman Theatre, Corvaia Palace, the Cathedral, S.Domenico friary, Castelmola, Giardini Naxos, Isola Bella and the nearby seaside: Schisò, Recanati and Mazzarò.
Catania and the Cyclops Riviera (distance 15 Km): town re-built in baroque style after the awful earthquake which destroyed it, almost totally, in 1693.
To be visited: the ancient centre of the town with the Cathedral, the Town hall, the Elephant fountain, University square, The Ursino Castle, the Bellini Theatre and Via Crociferi, a wonderful baroque street in the middle of the town.
Just 5 Km north from Catania is the Cyclops Riviera with the fishing villages of Acicastello and Acitrezza famous for its rocks (I Faraglioni) which, according to legend, Polifemo flung against the boat of the escaping Ulysses.
Mount Etna (distance 30 km): an excursion up to Mount Etna is a definite “must see”. At 3300 metres., it is the highest volcano in Europe. From the top of the Mountain you can look over the whole Etna region and take in with the a large part of eastern Sicily, the Eolian Islands and the coasts of Calabria. Etna landscapes and vegetation are well-known all over the world for their beauty and uniqueness as well. On Etna's slopes it is possible to ski in winter and go for unforgettable walks in spring, summer and autumn.
Syracuse distance 75 kms: one of the main touristic spot in Sicily, famous for the archeological area, the ancient Greek theatre, the "Orecchio di Dioniso", the baroque downtown and the "Fonte Aretusa"
